HOW TO GET YOUR FREE SERVER

Setting up your free Mumble server takes four simple steps:

  1. Sign in with Google — no separate account to create or password to remember
  2. Choose your region — United States, Europe, or Asia-Pacific for the lowest latency
  3. Server is created automatically — you get a unique address, port, and super-user password
  4. Connect and start talking — download the Mumble client and connect using your server details

That's it. Your server is persistent — it stays online as long as you use it. Servers that haven't seen a connection in 30 days are recycled to free up resources, but you can always create a new one.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

A free Mumble server is ideal for:

Gamers — Mumble's ultra-low latency is perfect for competitive gaming where reaction time matters. Every server runs at 72 kbit/s per user — higher than Discord's free tier — with no background telemetry eating your bandwidth.

Communities & Guilds — run your own private voice server for your gaming clan, study group, or hobby community. Up to 15 members at once with full channel management.

Developers — integrate server status into your app, website, or bot using the REST API and webhooks. Embed live player count badges in your GitHub README or forum signature.

Privacy-conscious users — Mumble is open-source and doesn't track you. RedMumble runs no ads and collects no voice data. Your conversations are your own.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Is the Mumble server really free forever?

Yes. RedMumble is a passion project, not a business. There are no premium tiers, no trial periods, and no ads. The service is free as long as it runs.

What happens if my server is inactive?

Servers with no connections for 30 days are automatically recycled. You'll receive a warning email at 25 days. If your server is recycled, you can create a new one instantly.

Can I increase the user limit beyond 15?

Currently all servers have the same 15-user limit. This keeps the service sustainable for everyone. For larger groups, consider self-hosting Mumble.

Which Mumble client should I use?

The official Mumble client is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. On mobile, Mumla (Android) and Plumble work with any Mumble server including RedMumble.

Can I set a server password?

Yes. You get full admin access to your server. Set a password, customize the welcome message, create channels, and manage user permissions — all from the RedMumble dashboard.

What regions are available?

RedMumble currently has Mumble servers in three regions: United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Choose the region closest to your group for the best voice quality.

Is there an API?

Yes. Every server includes a REST API for querying status, users, and channels, plus real-time webhooks and embeddable SVG badges. See the Developer API documentation.

How is RedMumble different from Discord?

Mumble is open-source with significantly lower audio latency — important for competitive gaming. RedMumble gives you a private server with no tracking, no ads, and no data collection. Discord offers more features (text chat, screen sharing) but collects extensive user data and shows ads.
